Introduction to SEO: complete basic guide with everything you need.
You probably confused SEO with the CEO more than once (don't worry, it happened to all of us). Although phonetically they sound the same, they are both acronyms for two words with a completely different meaning:
- SEO (Search Engine Optimization): search engine optimization, in its translation into Spanish.
- CEO: (Chief Executive Officer): executive director.
Well, as you see, two words that sound the same, but have nothing to do with each other. Having made this distinction, we are now ready to delve deeper into the concept that interests us: SEO.
What is SEO?
Let's start starting with the definition that Google gives us in its SEO guide for beginners:
| This is the process of improving a site so that search engines can better understand it. It is also the position held by the person who works to improve search engine positioning: we have just hired a new SEO to improve our presence on the Web. |
In a broader explanation, SEO consists of increasing thefree trafficthat comes from search engines to your website.
How does it work?
In simple terms, Google basically acts as a “watchdog” of web pages: it checks which ones are most useful for what is being requested in the search engines.

The first results always correspond to paid content. We can tell because in the upper left corner, a label appears with the word “sponsored.” This means that, to be there, you have to pay.

However, if we go down, we will find content that no longer has that tag. These results are organic, that is, they appear there because Google considers that they have the most relevant content for the search being performed.

How to compete in organic results?
First of all, creating valuable, interesting, complete and original content. However, there is no point in writing the best note or article in the world if no one is going to read us. This is where SEO strategies get to work to best combine different positioning resources, mainly the use of keywords and internal links.
In simple terms, SEO involves two things: visibility and your place in the rankings (which are the processes that search engines use to determine what place a particular page should have within the search results pages).
Pillars of SEO.
The professional who carries out search optimization functions must know them in order to understand how the Google search engine classifies the results. To do this, it is based on 4 fundamental pillars, which we can also call “types of SEO”:
SEO ON PAGE.
It refers to all the aspects that we can improve within our website to achieve better organic positioning (hence “ON” page). This includes:
- The URLs.
- Keywords.
- The written content.
- The title.
- The images.
SEO OFF PAGE.
It refers to all the aspects that we can improve outside our website to position it in a better way. (the actions are external to the site, that's why “OFF” page). This includes:
- Link building.
- Marketing on social networks.
- Guest blogging on other sites.
- Pay attention to customer reviews and testimonials.
- Influencer marketing.
TECHNICAL SEO.
Refers to the technical optimization of your website. In simple terms, we could say that this type of SEO takes care of the “health” of your site. This includes reviewing:
- Website architecture.
- Site maps.
- HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
- Traceability.
- Page speed.
LOCAL SEO.
Refers to the practice of amplifying the presence of a website locally. This will allow the pages to reach people from nearby areas: for example: search for “breweries near me.” The order of the results that will appear after this search depends on how developed the local SEO the businesses have. This includes taking into account:
- Google my business.
- Local appointments.
- User ratings.
As you will see, SEO is made up of a lot of elements that we are going to address in a series of articles on the subject. This is just a short introduction so you can get an overview of what it entails and means.
