Not everything that shines is innovation: why many 'tech' companies are only covering up old processes

In the midst of the digital age, many companies claim to be going through a “technological transformation”. They redesign their websites, buy new tools, launch internal apps or install dashboards with colorful graphics. Everything seems to indicate that they are at the forefront.

But, when we look deeper, we discover an uncomfortable reality: not everything that is sold as innovation really is. In many cases, they are only washing up old processes with new technology, without changing anything fundamentally.

This article analyzes why this phenomenon occurs, what its risks are and how to build a true culture of innovation that generates real impact.

Real innovation vs. digital makeup

Authentic innovation involves changing the way you work and make decisions. It is not just about digitizing a manual process, but about rethinking it from scratch.

For example:

  • Digital make-up: move from Excel spreadsheets to management software... but continue loading the data manually without automating it.
  • Real innovation: redesign the workflow so that data is automatically integrated and enables real-time decisions.

The difference is whether technology solves a root problem or simply puts a modern filter on something that no longer works.

Why companies make this mistake

There are three main reasons:

  1. Pressure to appear modern
In a market where “being digital” seems obligatory, many companies adopt technologies just to show that they are up to date, even if they do not have a clear plan.
  2. Lack of strategy
Software is purchased or platforms are implemented without asking: what problem does this solve? or how does it improve the customer or team experience?
  3. Cultural resistance
Innovation requires changes in habits, roles and ways of leading. And many times, the organizational culture is not prepared for that leap.

The cost of digital makeup

When the “transformation” remains on the surface, consequences appear:

  • Team burnout: frustrated employees who feel that everything has changed to stay the same.
  • Low tool adoption: platforms that no one uses because they don't solve anything.
  • Loss of competitiveness: while other companies truly innovate, your organization remains in “seeming” instead of “doing”.

The result: a lot of spending on technology, but little impact on results.

How to detect if your company is only faking processes

Some warning signs:

  • There is more talk about “the tool” than about business objectives.
  • The processes are still just as slow, just with new interfaces.
  • There are no clear metrics to evaluate whether innovation generates value.
  • Teams feel that technology complicates rather than simplifies.

If your company meets several of these, it is probably rendering processes instead of transforming them.

The path to authentic innovation

To avoid falling into digital makeup, three pillars are needed:

1. Clear strategy

Each initiative must answer simple questions: what problem do we solve? How will we measure the impact? What organizational changes does it imply?

2. Agility culture

These are not giant projects that take years. Agile methodologies allow to validate quickly, learn from users and adjust without fear.

3. Technology at the service of business

The tool is never the end in itself. It must be integrated into a workflow that simplifies, automates and generates valuable data to make better decisions.

At Lab9 we believe that innovation is not about having the latest technological fad, but rather about creating changes that truly improve the experience of clients, teams and businesses.

That's why we combine:

  • Innovation consulting to align technology with strategy.
  • UX/UI and agile development to create simple and effective experiences.
  • Methodologies such as Design Sprint to validate solutions in days, not months.

Our mission is not to disguise processes, but to help companies rethink them from scratch to truly grow.

Not everything that shines is innovation. True change occurs when technology transforms culture, processes and the way decisions are made.
