TikTok and infinite scroll: how its design captured the attention of an entire generation.

The scroll that doesn't let you think.

You open TikTok, watch a video in full screen and, without doing anything else, you swipe. No menu. No distractions. Just your finger and the following content. That minimalist design, without decisions, is key: it eliminates the initial cognitive barrier and keeps you in an emotional loop.

According to El País, this infinite scroll does not only seek to entertain: it increases the feeling of boredom and reduces attention, generating a distracted addiction rather than a meaningful experience. UX studies show that constantly switching between clips fragments focus and impairs prospective memory.

Why does the algorithm work so well?

TikTok doesn't ask you what you want to see. Your “for you page” automatically adapts to what you react to: likes, viewing time, comments. A recent experiment revealed that in just 200 videos the algorithm is already training your personalized content, reducing diversity and reinforcing your comfort zone.

In Spain and Latin America this formula works: TikTok is already preferred by Generation Z as a search engine for products and communities, more than Google.

Design principles that e-commerce should take note of.

1. Full screen vertical video.

The user does not decide, he just slides. Without distractions, visual content takes all the multimedia attention.

2. Hook in seconds.

An immediate hook: if the first two seconds do not attract attention, the swipe has already occurred. The content must engage from the second zero.

3. Experiences to discover (discovery commerce).

TikTok Shop is already revolutionizing e-commerce: you discover, see, buy without leaving the app. In Spain, 70% discover new brands and 50% buy within the platform. In Latin America, the adoption of live shopping and social commerce as a vital channel for SMEs is growing.

4. Authentic narrative, not produced.

Spontaneous content connects more. The Brand Fusion strategy suggests that authenticity builds trust and community, especially among young people who value inclusive individuality.

What brands and creators can learn in Argentina or Spain.

  • Use short vertical video from minute zero, highlighting the step to action or the value of the product in a few seconds.
  • Adapt to the agile TikTok Shop model: if you sell, show them without leaving consumption, taking advantage of live shopping or real reviews.
  • Bet on authentic microvideos rather than polished productions. Real content generates real engagement.
  • Work with local micro-influencers: their close voice builds loyalty and converts better, especially in emerging niches in Latin America.

Risks that you cannot ignore.

Infinite scrolling can be captivating, but it can also be exhausting. A study suggests that introducing design frictions, such as forcing you to react before moving forward, improves content retention even if it frustrates the user a little. Additionally, excessive consumption of short videos reduces the ability to retain future intentions—prospective memory is affected.

In Latin America, it is recommended to encourage conscious use: limiting notifications and setting usage limits can improve the relationship with this seductive app.

The digital paradox: capturing attention, but conserving memory.

TikTok redefines how we get attention. It teaches us that fewer buttons, more scrolling and more automatic attention can be powerful. But it also reminds us of the cost: cognitive fragmentation, memory loss and emotional exhaustion.

For brands that sell online, the challenge is twofold: capturing attention TikTok style without sacrificing authentic connection, memorization and real meaning.
